Kami, Pertubuhan-pertubuhan Pembela Islam (PEMBELA) dan Allied Coordinating Committee for Islamic NGOs (ACCIN), dua gabungan terbesar pertubuhan-pertubuhan Islam di Malaysia yang dianggotai oleh lebih 100 buah pertubuhan, menolak Merdeka Statement in Commemoration of Malaysia?s 50th Anniversary of Independence yang disediakan oleh Centre for Public Policy Studies, Asian Strategy and Leadership Institute (ASLI) dan disokong oleh beberapa pertubuhan bukan kerajaan di negara ini, yang turut cenderung untuk merombak terma-terma penting Kontrak Sosial yang telah dipersetujui oleh kaum-kaum di Malaysia. Dokumen ini didakwa bertujuan untuk melaksanakan Agenda Malaysia Baru (A New Malaysian Agenda) dengan mengemukakan lapan strategi teras.

Young boy recites the Qur’an

Subhanallah, the boy sure has a beautiful voice that complements this beautiful passage from the Qur’an very well. Witnessing this performance from a boy no older than nine or ten years old certainly gives you something to pause. Not many people, not even those twice his age, could do something similar to this.

But today I discerned that part of the grouse is about the inequality of official treatment between Islam and the other religions. I think it is unreasonable to “demand” equality of official treatment when the Constitution singles out only Islam as “the religion of the Federation”. The Constitution does not even say what the other religions are! This is part of our social contract. If we challenge this, we lay ourselves open to further challenges from all sides that will unravel our national fabric.
