Poem: Advice for the Muslim July 23rd, 2007

The following poem is the translation of a part of the Persian Dîwân by Mawlânâ Diyâ’ ad-dîn Khâlid al-Baghdadî (qaddas-Allâhu ta’âlâ sirrah al-’azîz).

OH WHAT A PITY!

I’ve idled my life away, oh what a pity!
Never thought of the Morrow, oh what a pity!

I’ve set the building in the air so foolishly,
My faith on weak foundation, oh what a pity!

I’ve gone too far saying His Mercy is endless,
Forgotten His Name “Qahhâr”, oh what a pity!

I’ve dived into sins and never done any good,
Why gone astray the right path, oh what a pity!

I’ve struggled to win the world and worldly virtue,
And missed the endless blessings, oh what a pity!

The road is rough and dark, the Devil leads the way,
Sins are heavy, I weep all day, oh what a pity!

Without a single virtue to appear in my deed-book,
How will this Khâlid be saved, oh what a pity!

Yusuf Islam: The Beloved July 17th, 2007

Title: The Beloved
Album: An Other Cup
Artist: Yusuf Islam
Year: 2007

His wisdom flowed from Heaven’s Book
just like threaded pearls,
just like threaded pearls.

He left his self to flee to God
and God sent him back to us.

He was born to be the beloved
a will of the Divine
he was born to be the beloved
he was born to guide.

He prayed all his nights alone
in stars and Angels’ sight
and in the day he lit the way
with blazing words so bright.

He was born to be the beloved
a will of the Divine
He was born to be the beloved
he was born to be kind.

Title: This Is Islam
Album: Unknown
Artist: Mustaqim Sahir

People of the world
do you know the truth about Islam?
or do you think its about
bombing planes and killing innocent people?

Forget about the lies
I am here to tell you how it really is
you deserve to know the truth
about this beautiful way of life.

People of the world
Islam is all about peace
terrorism, it doesn’t teach
Its all about love and family and charity
and praying to One God, this is Islam.

It’s something you should know
I know its really helped me grow
it does away with greed, filth, arrogance
and teaches us morality

A perfect way to live
so don’t believe all you see and hear
too many people wear a title of a Muslim
but they don’t practice Islam

Dawud Wharnsby: The Prophet’s Hands June 23rd, 2007

Title: The Prophet’s Hands
Album: Enter Into Peace
Artist: Dawud Wharnsby (featuring Zain Bhika and Yusuf Islam)

Holding to the wheel, each mile closer to conclusion.
His knuckles and his strands of hair are slowly turning white.
As he studies all the lines, like highways on his hands,
he recalls how straight the road once seemed, as he is left wondering what’s right.
The paths all curve and bend, sometimes he thinks they’ll never end.
How much longer will he push on? How much more can he pretend?

The Prophet’s hands, silken smooth and soft to touch,
sometimes he needs those hands so much,
to feel them clasp his own, let him now he’s not alone.
The Prophet’s hands, If they could take over the reigns,
if they could take away the strains,
guide him to the end with the patience of a friend.
Oh Allah, sometimes he needs the Prophet’s hands.
