The Lina Joy issue in retrospect

I have already commented on the decision a few days ago, so whatever that I needed to say had been said. No further comment is necessary and as far as I am concerned, the issue (which is actually a technical wrangle over whether Lina Joy should or should not obtain a declaration of apostasy from the Shariah courts) is over. It is of course in the interest of the Islamophobes to totally misconstrue the situation and make rallying cries of “freedom of religion is dead in Malaysia” (or any such statement to the effect).

Of course we know that such claims are totally false and I still see Muslims, Christians, Buddhists and Hindus around me. But hey, I digress.

While this decision is hailed as a landmark decision that will certainly seal the Shariah court dominance over matters concerning Islam and Islamic affairs, I believe Muslims should not be resting easy. We know that Lina Joy, whether through neglect or simply ignorance, has chosen a religion which Allah subhana wa ta’ala has made mention of several times throughout the Qur’an and describing its believers as those who are lost (see the ayaat in Sura’ al-Fatihah: siraatal ladzhi na’an amta alayhim, ghayril maghdoobi alayhim waladhaaleen). The Qur’an is replete with verses dealing with Christians and Christianity so no further remark is necessary.

I am of the belief that anyone who has been consciously studying comparative religion and aware of the history of how Christianity came into being; the history of the Bible and methodologies concerning its textual criticism; and of the theology of logos and the competing half-naked man-gods prevalent in ancient Rome at the time would certainly think twice about considering Christianity (or to be exact, the Western Christianity version) as a way of life and ethics.

In retrospect, Muslims should ask themselves what had went wrong in their effort to propagate this religion? Have we become so laidback and apathic from this aspect, to the extent that one of our own had chosen to leave this Religion of God for the worship of a half-naked man? Has our da’wah effort been expressedly identified? Were we not concerned with her welfare previously until when it is obvious that it has become too late, all we can do is shout and scream from the sidelines and yet fail to save her aqidah?

Lina Joy is obviously destined for Jahannam and Allah Almighty on the Day of Judgement will question each Malaysian Muslim as to what they have done to prevent her from becoming a pagan. What will your answer be? Do you not fear His Wrath?
